Abstract

Pioneer in the study of phytochemistry in the country,Otto Richard Gottlieb was responsible for numerousadvances in natural product chemistry, botanical evolutionresearch and chemical ecology. He also contributedto the development of drugs from his work with neolignans. Deceased on June 20, 2011, at age 90, thismember of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences workedat the largest universities and research institutions inthe country, and knew of the need for multidisciplinaryefforts to understand the workings of nature. the extinctionof important species in the country even beforea mapping was done on the subject
