Foreign investment flows play a significant role in the economic and political transformation of countries with a low level of economic development. Investments in transition economies in Central and Eastern Europe have helped create a functioning market economy and open them up to the global economy. Their presence in the Bulgarian economy is an important factor in the process of accession to the European Union (EU), changing the production structure in accordance with the requirements of the Single Market. At the same time, foreign direct investment has contributed to the inclusion of national production potential in global value chains (GVC).
