This article presents current information on the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and diagnostic methods of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth syndrome (SIBO) from the perspective of the systemic influence of the microbiota on the patient's body (the "gut-organ" axis). Particular attention is paid to the standardization of diagnostic breath tests, the interpretation of their results depending on the type of gas produced (hydrogen/methane), and a differentiated approach to evidence-based antibacterial therapy.
