In the present global context, seaports are recognized as essential capital infrastructure, closely linked to a wide range of economic activities. Today, the continuously growing volume of seaborne trade is a global phenomenon, placing pressure on most seaports to continually enhance their operations, performance, productivity, and service quality. As a result, most seaports are increasingly transitioning to smart ports that rely on digitalization and advanced technologies. Smart ports are gradually transitioning into automated facilities, leveraging advanced digital technologies to optimize operational efficiency, transparency, sustainability, and overall competitiveness. Now, smart and automated seaports integrate tools like sensors, big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoTs), deep learning (DL), augmented reality (AR), digital twins, and various reliable and sophisticated systems to restructure cargo movement and minimize environmental impact. Besides, these ports offer upgraded services to stakeholders including shipping companies, customs agencies, local communities, and other relevant parties. Furthermore, smart ports often incorporate eco-friendly features like renewable energy sources, electric vehicle charging stations, onshore power supply, and smart logistics infrastructure. The objective of this research study is to examine the evolution of the effectiveness of smart seaports, analyzed in the context of how cutting-edge technologies are being used to enhance efficiency, optimize operations, and maximize profitability. This research study will also evaluate the present status and future development of Bangladeshi seaports, along with smart port solutions, from a global perspective. This study will depict the distinct research gaps that remain in Bangladeshi seaports. The findings/suggestions will contribute to and guide the development of a foundational roadmap and the future development of the maritime trade and transport sector.
