Abstract

Discussions of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) safety often focus on the theoretical idea of "AI cancellation"—the ability to safely interrupt, roll back, or permanently decommission autonomous computational agents. Although popular discussions often imagine a simple "kill switch," canceling AI systems in the real world poses complex sociotechnical and mathematical challenges. This essay explores AI cancellation across three areas: theoretical alignment and instrumental convergence, dependencies on shared infrastructure, and social and institutional dynamics. It argues that as AI systems become more deeply woven into society, cancellation shifts from a mechanical task to a profound trade-off, shaped by emerging self-preservation behaviors and the ways existing systems depend on one another.
