Abstract

The diving response (DR) is an innate adaption that we share with aquatic and land mammals as well as birds and reptiles. According to the aquatic ape theory we once spent a considerable amount of time in the water, hence this adaptation has evolved over time to enhance our survival chances by conserving oxygen when submerged in water [1].

The DR is activated when our face encounters cold water or moisture, and it is usually exaggerated when simultaneously holding our breath (apnea).
