The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process is a multidisciplinary tool designed to ensure that environmental and social considerations are integrated into decision-making for development projects. While traditionally focused on biophysical impacts, the inclusion of Social Impact Assessment (SIA) has become increasingly vital. SIA examines the consequences of interventions on human populations, including changes in livelihoods, community cohesion, cultural practices, and social well-being.
This paper explores the significance of SIA as an integral component of EIA, with reference to the Indian regulatory framework while situating the discussion within a global context. It highlights key principles, methods, and processes of SIA and emphasizes its role in fostering equitable and sustainable development. The paper concludes that integrating SIA into EIA not only strengthens environmental governance but also ensures inclusive growth and resilience for future generations.
