Abstract

Artificial intelligence has evolved from rule-based symbolic systems into learning architectures capable of perception, prediction, content generation, reasoning, planning, tool use, and increasingly autonomous action. This qualitative literature review examines this transition as more than a technological chronology. It interprets AI evolution through five interrelated dimensions: technological evolution, capability expansion, changing human roles, human–AI integration, and governance. Drawing on contemporary peer-reviewed literature published primarily between 2020 and 2026, the review identifies seven thematic developments. AI has progressed from encoded rules toward learned representations and goal-directed action; generative AI has expanded AI into a general-purpose content collaborator; agentic AI adds planning, memory, tool use, and iterative task execution; human roles increasingly shift from
operator toward collaborator, delegator, and governor; human–AI complementarity remains conditional rather than automatic; effective deployment requires calibrated rather than maximal trust; and governance requirements increase as AI systems acquire greater operational agency. The article proposes the Evolution–Capability–Role–Integration–Governance (ECRIG) framework to explain these relationships. The framework suggests that sustainable benefits from advanced AI emerge when technological capability, human role allocation, interaction architecture, and governance mechanisms develop jointly. The
review concludes that the central challenge of the agentic-AI era is not choosing between humans and machines, but designing accountable systems in which increasingly capable artificial agents remain aligned with meaningful human goals, authority, and oversight.
